A practical sustainable-kitchen checklist for UK caterers
Published 2026-10-23
Start a sustainable-kitchen review by measuring waste, reducing unnecessary material and checking the systems already available to your business. A product labelled green is not automatically the best choice for every job or disposal route.
Twelve checks for your team
- Record a baseline. Track food waste, discarded wrap and roll changes over representative shifts before setting a savings target.
- Use suitable reusable lids where practical. Check cleaning, storage and food-contact suitability rather than replacing one problem with another.
- Match wrap to the task. Check food type, temperature and coverage before choosing film, foil or parchment.
- Check dispenser fit. Trial the actual roll and cutter. Do not infer tested compatibility from width alone.
- Right-size each sheet. Train staff to use enough material for the job without unnecessary overlap.
- Check recycling duties. Confirm the rules for your UK jurisdiction and the arrangements required for your business size.
- Agree collection routes. Ask your collector about clean foil, film, coated paper and compostable packaging before changing bin signs.
- Keep compostable packaging out of ordinary food-waste collections in England. Arrange a dedicated route where available or follow non-recyclable-waste guidance.
- Request evidence. Ask for food-contact information and documents supporting any compostability or recycled-content claim.
- Compare the delivered cost. Consider roll dimensions, usable yield, carriage and storage capacity. Case buying does not automatically reduce cost or environmental impact.
- Train each shift. Cover labelling, cleaning, raw and ready-to-eat separation, and the correct waste streams.
- Review and communicate results. Compare measured outcomes with the baseline and share only claims you can substantiate.
Check the relevant recycling deadline
England's workplace recycling rules took effect on 31 March 2025, with micro-firms employing fewer than 10 full-time-equivalent staff having until 31 March 2027. Requirements elsewhere in the UK differ.
Avoid unsupported purchasing claims
Do not tell customers that PlanetWrap foil is 100% recycled or that its film is certified for home or industrial composting: those claims are not currently verified for publication. Review the current evidence status.
Frequently asked questions
Where should a small cafe start?
Check its waste duties, measure the biggest losses and choose a manageable change. Staff habits and suitable reusable containers can matter as much as changing a wrap.
Will greener purchasing always save money?
No. Compare real quotes and measured usage, including delivery and disposal costs. A trial can show whether a change works for your kitchen.
