Cost per metre: how to compare catering wrap prices fairly
Published 2026-10-23
A cheaper roll is not necessarily cheaper for the job. Compare length and width as well as the quoted price, then check usable coverage, thickness, dispenser fit, delivery and waste.
Two useful calculations
Cost per metre = price per roll ÷ roll length in metres.
Cost per square metre = price per roll ÷ (length in metres × width in metres).
Divide a case price by the number of rolls first. Convert centimetres to metres when calculating area. Use a consistent VAT basis: businesses able to recover the relevant VAT will usually compare ex-VAT costs; otherwise include irrecoverable VAT.
Worked example: illustrative prices only
These invented figures show the method. They are not PlanetWrap prices, competitor quotations or an offer to sell.
| Roll | Width × length | Price per roll | Cost per metre | Cost per square metre |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A | 45cm × 300m | £30.00 ex VAT | 10.0p | 22.2p |
| B | 44cm × 200m | £18.00 ex VAT | 9.0p | 20.5p |
| C | 30cm × 300m | £15.00 ex VAT | 5.0p | 16.7p |
Roll C has the lowest cost per area in this example, but it may not provide the coverage needed for a particular container. Measure the tray and required overlap. Using two sheets can increase material use, but the actual effect depends on orientation, overlap and the job; do not assume the cost always doubles.
Include the costs the calculation misses
- Performance: unsuitable film or foil may lead to extra layers or discarded sheets. Trial the product rather than judging by thickness alone.
- Waste: measure tangles, tears and oversize sheets during representative shifts.
- Delivery: add the quoted carriage charge and any minimum-order implications.
- Fit: a long roll is not useful if the core or outer diameter is unsuitable for the dispenser.
- Disposal: use your collector's actual charges and accepted streams; do not assume a compostable label reduces collection costs.
Frequently asked questions
Is a longer roll better value?
At the same price and suitable specification, more usable metres reduce cost per metre. Between differently priced rolls, calculate rather than assume. Longer rolls can also mean fewer roll changes at equivalent usage.
Are PlanetWrap trade prices published here?
No. Current prices, quantities, delivery and commercial terms are supplied with a quote. No private landed-cost figures are published.
Should I compare film only with film?
Compare options that are suitable for the same task. A low price per area does not make one material an appropriate substitute for another.
